Actually, this part of the game really affected me , because I am a big believer in people being able to chose whether to live or die, especially in situation's like his. Even if you "make him see the light" I just think that when someone wishes to leave this earth , its their choice and should be able to do so. Imagine being a quadrapeligic, and living your life not being able to move or do much of anything.
I wouldn't want to live that way. And then have no way of letting others know I wanted to die most quads cannot talk contrary to what most think and your life is just a living hell.

He"ll ask you to kill him, by going underground and destroying his heart. The alternative is to burn him down with a flamethrower, but the citizens here will all become hostile if you do it that way.
Also, you can get a perk and a special item by doing this quest the right way. Before you head on to attempt the quest, return to the main Oasis area through the gate and find Sapling Yew. Save your game, then talk to her. Ask her about her god and try to pass the speech check to learn that is is afraid of fire. You do have multiple options to complete this quest, involving putting sap on the roots or even accelerating Bob"s growth. Different people around the town will give you rewards if you do it "their way", but I prefer to do it as Harold asked, as you will get the Barkskin perk as a reward instead of a weak helmet or robes.
At any rate, find Branchtender Cypress to get the key to the underground, but you will likely be interrupted by the inhabitants arguing. Talk to them and take your pick, ignore their requests if you like and just kill the heart. Get the key from Cypress and enter the caverns.
