This willingness to act in order to ease the suffering of another is the main difference between sympathy and compassion. Compassion is associated with qualities such as patience, wisdom, kindness and perseverance.
It is also often the main component of altruism. You can define an act of compassion by its helpfulness. This is the key difference between sympathy and compassion. That is, in sympathy, you understand that someone is suffering and you care about this. However, in compassion, you go a step further; you understand that someone is suffering and you are willing to alleviate the suffering.
Thus, the degree of involvement indicates the difference between sympathy and compassion. It can be tricky to differentiate sympathy and empathy. The main difference? Instead, you are able to understand what the person is feeling. However, you can understand that your friend is sad. Compassion kicks empathy and sympathy up a notch. When you are compassionate, you feel the pain of another i. When you are practicing compassion, you can stay present with suffering.
Thupten Jinpa, Ph. Jinpa posits that compassion is a four-step process:. Because of the above four steps, CCT participants first learn about and practice mindfulness, or nonjudgmental awareness of the present moment. Why mindfulness? As a teacher of CCT, I often field questions about compassion. For example, has anyone ever truly listened to you as you share a problem?
They listened without judgment. Simply listening with your full presence can be one of the most compassionate acts you can offer.
Since humans are inherently selfish, not all people are innately compassionate. Nevertheless, there are many good reasons for cultivating compassion. When we grow in compassion, our relationships improve because we gain a better understanding of how another person feels, which opens the gateway to effective communication. Since developing compassion requires a high level of mindfulness it also allows us to access our inner guidance system, which provides us a wealth of information about our real purpose during this lifetime.
Although it might sound contradictory, the more tender we feel about our history, struggles, and suffering, the more likely we are to feel the vast interconnectedness of all people and all things.
The healing that compassion provides has the potential to reshape our world and lift us into harmony and grace, which, in effect, brings heaven to earth. Steven M.
Both are emotions, and both have a behavioral verbal component that demonstrates either compassion or sympathy to others. From a mental health perspective, compassion is very healing and sympathy is not although often people say they like people to be sympathetic. Sympathy in a clinical therapeutic relationship is mostly harmful.
A compassionate person demonstrates understanding by listening and then letting the other know that they get it, understand, and care. Offering advice, for example, while sometimes thought to be compassionate, is actually in the service of the giver of the advice feeling good for giving advice and does not show compassion for the other. Compassion is verbally best communicated by repeating the words in a reflective not parroting way back to the other.
When it comes to expressing compassion, reflective listening truly helps by demonstrating understanding. Responding by saying back what one heard from the other person, especially attending to their feelings, demonstrates focusing on the person and letting go of internal distractions. If you can clear your mind and truly listen, you are offering a deeply compassionate gift to the other person. Sympathy lacks understanding of the other.
