Clearly Anse is not that interested in Addie, but because she is single, and he has a home, she decides to marry him. Once Addie and Anse were married, their relationship seemed to become even stranger, and Addie became very unhappy with life.
It becomes very apparent that this marriage is abnormal when Addie describes how she feels violated by Anse when they have sex The two of them did not even have sex very often, but the first time that they did, Addie became pregnant with Cash. Once Cash was born Addie did not like being a mother either, and she came to despise Anse even more because he is the one that got her pregnant and according to Addie, he "violated her aloneness" These problems continue so Addie decides that she is going to get back at Anse by cheating on him.
Addie was not even concerned really about Anse finding out. She says, "[…] I did not lie to him […] I hid nothing. I tried to deceive no one," She did not really even care if Anse found out about her secret love affair until she became pregnant.

Loyalty and betrayal: Sarty Snopes faces a moral dilemma: to be loyal to his father or to betray the family by warning Major de Spain about the planned barn burning.
As a man with virtually nothing—due largely to his own laziness and drunkenness—his campaign of serial arson is his way of exacting revenge on those much wealthier than himself. Why do farmers continually hire Abner as a sharecropper? They admire his ferocity.
